What is the Obstruction Rule?
Apr 01, 2023Everyone needs an @avery.greeson in their life 🤷🏽♀️😂🤣❤️
Btw, what @coachryancarver was saying at the end, if you are in the base path and run into a defender who isn’t making a play on the ball, GO to the next base 💯
What is the Obstruction Rule? An obstruction in softball is when a fielder gets in the way of a runner. By definition, it is “an act of a fielder who, while not in possession of the ball and not in the act of fielding the ball, impedes the progress of any runner”. The rule is designed to keep the game fair.
A runner’s progress to the next base can be impeded by an obstruction, which slows them down and prevents them from reaching their destination. This obstruction creates uncertainty about whether the runner would have made it to the base if they weren’t obstructed, denying them a fair opportunity. As a result, the impeded runner is granted the next base. In severe cases where it appears that a fielder intentionally harmed the runner, warnings or even ejections from the game may be issued to the fielder.
