College Athletes & NLI

A National Letter of Intent (NLI) is a document that a college-bound student-athlete signs to indicate their commitment to attend a specific college or university and participate in their sport. The NLI program is a voluntary program that is designed to help student-athletes, coaches, and schools manage the college recruiting process.

Pros of NLI:

  1. Provides a binding agreement between the student-athlete and the school: Once a student-athlete signs an NLI, they are committed to attending that school for one academic year and participating in the sport for which the scholarship is awarded.

  2. Protects the student-athlete's scholarship: The NLI program guarantees that a scholarship will be provided to the student-athlete for one academic year, and the school cannot revoke the scholarship as long as the student-athlete meets certain academic and other requirements.

  3. Simplifies the recruiting process: The NLI program streamlines the recruiting process for both the student-athlete and the school by providing a clear commitment from both parties.

  4. Provides a sense of security for the coach: Coaches can plan and prepare for their upcoming season knowing that they have a specific group of student-athletes committed to their program.

Cons of NLI:

  1. Limits the student-athlete's options: Once a student-athlete signs an NLI, they are committed to attending that school for one academic year and cannot consider other scholarship offers.

  2. Does not guarantee playing time: Signing an NLI does not guarantee playing time for the student-athlete, and they may find themselves sitting on the bench or not getting the opportunity to play.

  3. Can be restrictive: The NLI program can be restrictive in that it limits a student-athlete's ability to transfer to another school without penalty.

  4. Can be costly: If a student-athlete decides not to attend the school they signed an NLI with, they may have to pay back a portion of the scholarship money they received.

In summary, the National Letter of Intent (NLI) program is a voluntary program that is designed to help student-athletes, coaches, and schools manage the college recruiting process. It provides a binding agreement between the student-athlete and the school, guarantees scholarship, and simplifies the recruiting process but it also has its downsides like limiting the student-athlete's options, not guaranteeing playing time, restrictive, and costly.
